There are many different types of fishing lure available today. Read here to find out what a lure is used for if your not sure. I will try and cover them all, but to start I'll go through the most popular lures.

Spinners

dexter wedgeSpinners are one of the most simple types of lure, they're basically just lumps of metal shaped to look like a small sprat or sand eel. One of the most well know spinner is the Abu Toby. Spinners are easy to cast as they have natural weight and normally have one treble hook at the back. they are also quite cheap.

Main Advantages of Spinners

  • Cheap to buy
  • Cast further
  • Cast easily

Main Disadvantages of Spinners

  • Not as realistic as a Plug
  • Can be easily snagged in shallow water

Plugs

plugYou could say plugs are a level above spinners in their realism - and cost!. They are generally made of plastic or balsa wood that is spray painted to imitate a small bait fish like a sprat or launce. The can either float, sink or be used on the surface and normally have two to three sets of treble hooks.

Main Advantages of Plugs

  • Look more realistic than spinners
  • Surface plugs can be fished in shallow water

Main Disadvantages of Plugs

  • Expensive
  • Lighter smaller plugs can be difficult to cast - especially into wind
  • Need more maintanace (e.g. more trebles to replace)

Redgills

These are just simple imitation of a sand eel. they are made of rubber and have a single hook inserted down the middle - they are very popular with wreck fishing for Pollack.

Pirks

A pirks is the least sophisticated lure being just a long lump of stainless steel that has a large treble hook at the bottom, again these are mainly used for wreck fishing.
